I am so excited to share that I am officially a librarian in a permanent role! I was recently hired as the Assistant Community Librarian at my local branch in Princeton, BC!
A Brief History
In 2012, shortly before finishing my BA in Canadian History at UVic, I realised I *might* need to figure out a more job related direction. After some reflection, I remembered when, as a child, I moved my desk to the doorway of my bedroom, made library cards for my family members, and actively encouraged them to borrow books from my library. So, off I went to Library School at the University of Western Ontario in London.
I returned home to Victoria to a flooded job market. I worked several temporary contracts at the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) research library in North Saanich. This work ranged between boring and depressing, as much of our days were spent consolidating materials sent from DFO libraries that had been closed by the Harper government. My highlights of work there were processing inter-library loans, and my discovery of podcasts.
In 2016, Jeff and I moved to Princeton, BC where I put libraries on hold to work at RockRidge Canyon, a Young Life summer camp. I worked in Guest Services where I put my library degree to work organizing information, as I managed all the details for visiting guest groups and for summer camp.
Last summer, I had a total of four jobs- census collector, barista, intern coordinator back at RRC, and I was brought on to the auxiliary list for my local library! I quickly joined the on call lists for all the branches within 1.5 hours driving. This spring, ten years after completing my degree, I was just hired for my first permanent library position! Please see below, this nerdy librarian with her name badge and Summer Reading Club mom hat:
And then, I promptly went on maternity leave so this little munchkin could make her entrance into the world.
So, I’ll be back to work next March and very excited to be a part of the Princeton community in a whole new way!
Katie! This is amazing news! So excited for you 💜
